there are other improvements besides more cache. core duo 2 has seriously beefed up vector-units, advanced memory prefetch and other goodies. iirc, it should be about 20% faster, clock for clock
He's not comparing 1's to 2's. 2's are being offered in 2MB and 4MB versions, and those are being compared.

One of the main bonuses of a paid service is that it limits the number of users so they can get an email such as joe.blogs@me.com. When services become free, more people sign up until people have to settle for Joe.M.blogs5739@me.com, and then the service looses its upper-market feel.

This debate about video downloads, DRM, small screens vs. big screens, etc. just makes me suspicious of one thing: the iPod brandname is just too good to take chances with it.
As Steve Jobs said in the original presentation of iPod, music is something that relates to everyone. this product can be sold to anyone, and the related services have to make sense from the point of view of Mac and PC users alike. This doesn't happen with video, IMHO.. there are just too may details that prevent TV and video to appeal to everyone.. different film ratings, different availability of broadband, NTSC vs. PAL TV sets (to plug your "vPod" to), ...

So if I want a mid-range tower, I can configured it to have less RAM, a smaller HD and a completely useless graphics card, and still come in $200-300 more than a comparable machine from Dell/Gateway/etc.? Why can't Apple sell me a desktop with 2GB RAM stock and a 250GB HD for less than two grand?

Why can't you just download it and back it up on a USB key, or a thousand USB keys?
Give me one good reason why you can't do that. If you're posting on Macrumors you have enough bandwidth to get it, just may have to wait a few minutes.

This is a nice narrative but very unlikely.
1. RIM is a very experienced hardware developer that knows perfectly well how to procure the components it needs well ahead of time.
2. Realistically, they need only a relatively tiny number of screen to launch. What Apple is doing isn't on an entirely different level and isn't really going to distrupt the tiny production runs that RIM is going to start with. They won't start competing with Apple for production capacity until they have a hit on their hands. Obviously that may never happen.

And as I said before clearly it is not samsung's fault. Captivated is a GalaxyS phone.
Captivated is running android 2.1 while over in Europe it is getting the 2.3 updated. Tell me who is at fault there. Clearly not Samsung. Samsung has pointed the finger back at the carriers here multiple times.

Core 2 Duo (Merom/Conroe) was conspicuosly absent from this Keynote.
I too hope when the consumer lineup gets Core 2 Duo that they'll fill this gap with either a high end consumer machine or a low end pro.

It's pretty obvious what they'll be doing now. Core 2 Duo iMacs, Merom MacBook Pro's, MacBook and Mac mini stay the same.

can anyone comment on the sound quality when playing music on the iphone via the tomtom kit when it's connected to the car's sound system?
reason for asking: when i use a standard audio cable from the headphone output of my iphone into my car's aux in, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. i basically have to crank up the volume all the way on both my car system and the iphone to hear anything, and even what i hear isn't all that great.
The sound quality of the Car Kit going through the aux jack is excellent. Much better than coming from the headphone jack.

I did parenthesis, then multiplication or division from left to right. That's how I was taught it.

I dont think its going to be though the App Store. The only reason its thought he app store now is the minimise abuse.

...it was the same for Creative, Real and now Palm...they are almost dead with their crappy PDAs
I like my Treo a lot. But what i really want is its capabilities (better executed) in a phone the size of a RAZR or Samsung A900. Maybe that can be done, maybe not.

I think 2012 makes perfect sense for the iPhone 5. The 4 is still amazing and doesnt need a processor bump at the moment. Plus, I think the biggest thing, Apple wants to include 4G/LTE in the device. There is no point in releasing a 5 with just a processor bump unless it includes 4G, and my guess is they need a little more time polishing up the 4G device. The next iPhone could very well be a big change similar to 3GS to 4.
